Your class M drivers license counts for nothing in the world of Old School Racer. Forget all those rules your instructor told you about keeping the two wheels on the ground at all times and avoiding excessive bursts of speed. This game will have you flying though the air at top speeds in no time to the finish line at all costs. Did I mention there is a longest wheelie contest as well?

The concept of the game is really quite simple from the get go. This isn’t your typical motocross-style racing game where you battle against the computer for hours on end. Rather this title puts you through a series of challenging jumps, cliffs, peaks, and valleys in order to make it to the finish line with the fastest time possible.
The game comes packed with three different game modes that will most definitely keep you entertained for hours on end. The first of the three game modes is the traditional mode, where you will find yourself racing through a series of easy, normal, or hard levels in order to set the fastest time possible. You will also be awarded with either a bronze, silver, or gold metal if you break the in-game high score. The traditional game mode is also where you unlock the new dirt bikes that feature everything from better acceleration to higher top end.

The next series of levels comes in the form of the “Wacky Levels” game mode. This game set is very similar to that of the featured traditional set but with a few twists and turns to make the level more challenging and enjoyable. You must now avoid spike strips, fire, and even large gusts of wind while trying to make it to the finish line. This game mode adds a little more imagination to concept while testing your rider’s ability to stay on the bike through a slew of new dangers.

The last and probably most excited game mode featured in Old School Racer has to be the “Challenges Mode.” This game set includes four separate challenges;the long jump, the wheely, the flip, and the ball challenge. The Long jump challenge will test how far you can propel your dirt bike through the air by means of rotating the right thumb stick as fast as possible. The "wheely" and "flip" game modes are exactly as you would expect them to be and just as fun too. The Ball game mode is probably the most confusing and the most challenging out of the four. You must balance your dirt bike on a massive ball in order to make it to the finish line. Sounds easy right? Wrong. This is so much harder than you can imagine and according to the developers this challenge can and has been completed.

The challenges game mode is also where you will take notice of the global scoreboard implemented into this title. The global scoreboard will keep track of your best times and best scores and compare them against those of people across the world. This nice addition is what makes this game so hard to put down at times. You want to stretch your limits and climb atop the leader boards in order to brag to your friends on how they can barley break the top 50 when you right in the thick of things at number 3.

Can’t seem to get past a few of those game sets because you feel your bike is too slow or not quick enough?  Well no need to worry since the game offers the user the ability to upgrade to faster and more powerful bikes. You must be patient though because it’s going to take you a sizable amount of those clearly placed floating tokens to get a new bike. But, once you have gain enough tokens for some new bike swag you will be on your way to dethroning the leader-boards and finishing the game once and for all.

Despite all the exciting levels, numerous amount of bikes, and endless hours of enjoyment, I did have a few issues with this title along the way. Just as all successful projects have their minor blemishes; Old School Racer is no exception. The main problem I had was with a bit of lag that I experienced along the way. At times the game will lag just a little bit as if the game engine if trying to keep up with the users input. This doesn’t happen often and not on all levels but just enough to take notice. The lag should and will be ironed out once the developers release an update for the game in the very near future. The other issue I had was with the “Ball Challenge.” There are zero global leader board stats for this challenge, which makes me think that everyone else was having trouble figuring this one out. It seems like an awesome concept but is nearly impossible, I say nearly because it’s been confirmed that it can be competed, to complete.

Conclusion: I can’t remember the last time I had so much fun playing a 2D motorcycle game. Yes I agree “Road Rash” for Sega was pretty intense and pretty awesome but sometimes you just want to ride a motorcycle without engaging in fist-a-cuffs along the way. Yes there are also a few hilarious death sequences, as I always tend to point out in my reviews, and even a few surprises along the way. The main point is that this game is awesome and should be entered in your download query the minute you finish this article. An instant Indie classic in my book!
